Top 10 Common Spray Tan Problems and How to Fix Them

A perfect spray tan can transform your confidence, but sometimes issues arise that leave you wondering, “What went wrong?” At SugarTan, we’ve seen it all—and we’re here to help! Here are the 10 most common spray tan problems and how to solve them for a flawless glow every time.

1. Streaks and Uneven Application

The Problem: Streaky or patchy tan lines.

The Fix: Always exfoliate your skin before your appointment to ensure a smooth canvas. For post-tan streaks, lightly blend the area with a damp cloth or a touch of self-tanner.

2. Orange Tones

The Problem: Your tan turns orange instead of golden.

The Fix: A spray tan can appear orange if the DHA concentration in the tanning solution is too high for the individual’s skin tone or if the solution is applied too heavily. This may give the appearance of an orange tint. Only apply no more than 2oz of solution per spray tan and consider undertones, will help to avoid this issue.

3. Rapid Fading

The Problem: Your tan fades too quickly.

The Fix: Keep your skin hydrated! Use a sulfate-free moisturizer daily and avoid long, hot showers to preserve your glow.

4. Dark Elbows, Knees, and Ankles

The Problem: These areas look darker than the rest of your body.

The Fix: Apply a small amount of lotion to these areas before tanning to dilute the solution and create even coverage.

5. Sticky or Wet Feeling After Tanning

The Problem: Feeling tacky post-spray.

The Fix: Wear loose-fitting, dark clothing to your appointment, and avoid sweating or touching your skin until the tan has dried. Also using setting powder will help set your tan in areas that may sweat or crease easily.

6. Color Transfer on Clothes

The Problem: Tanning solution stains your clothes.

The Fix: Opt for loose, cotton fabrics and avoid wearing anything light-colored until your first rinse. Good, high quality spray tan solution should be oil-free and will not stain clothes.

7. Overdeveloped Tan on Hands and Feet

The Problem: Hands and feet look darker than the rest of your body.

The Fix: These areas absorb more solution. Apply a barrier cream or use a blending brush for a lighter application.

8. Itchy Skin Post-Tan

The Problem: Your skin feels irritated or dry.

The Fix: Use SugarTan’s nourishing tanning solutions, designed for sensitive skin. Hydrate with a non-oily lotion post-application.

9. Tan Breaking Apart on Dry Skin

The Problem: Patchiness on elbows, knees, or other dry areas.

The Fix: Regularly exfoliate and moisturize before your tan to avoid buildup in dry areas.

10. Your Tan Doesn’t Last as Long as You’d Like

The Problem: Your glow fades within days.

The Fix: Extend your tan by moisturizing, avoiding exfoliation, and reapplying a gradual tanning lotion from SugarTan’s product line.
